Gold Quill Awards: Mentorship Program
If you are entering or learning about Gold Quill for the first time, the entry process may seem a little overwhelming. Take a breath; you are not alone.
Because the requirements to enter Gold Quill are complex, we’re launching a new Mentorship program for 2009. The program will run from 1 November 2008 to 15 January 2009.
We will pair past winners and judges, as well as Accredited Business Communicators (ABCs) as mentors to any communicator who has not previously won a Gold Quill Award. By enrolling in this program, you will receive feedback on how to prepare and improve your entries and increase your chances of winning.
Your mentor is investing his or her time in your success. In return, we ask that once you commit to using a mentor, you make every effort to complete and submit your entry or entries.
Establish a schedule for check-ins. Set up your first meeting as soon as you decide to commit yourself to entering. Keep in mind that your mentor is offering guidance and support, but will not rewrite or directly alter your entry. When you win, we want the credit to be completely yours.
Mentors will be assigned on a first come, first served basis. To request a mentor, please e-mail the Gold Quill Chair at

Mentorship Guidelines: Mentees
If you are a mentee, your mentor will guide you through the process and suggest areas for improvement.
Ask early. The mentorship program ends 15 January 2009. Request a mentor early so that he or she has more time to give feedback.
Complete as much of your entry as you can. The more that you include in your draft, the more your mentor has to respond to.
Your Mentor’s Role
Your mentor’s primary focus is to review draft work plans and work samples and offer constructive feedback, suggestions, and encouragement.
He/she is there to advise and support you, but not to solve. Mentors will offer constructive feedback on areas for improvement, but will not attempt to fix or alter the entry.
If you have any questions, please direct them by e-mail to the Gold Quill Chair at
