Winning a Gold Quill Award: Proudly Philippines-made

by Donante Peji, Sun Life Financial, Philippines

As spring slowly gave way to the summer season of San Francisco, a different kind of warmth enveloped the four corners of Marriot’s Grand Ballroom on the night of 8 June 2009.

It was the Oscars of business communication. And though the winners were announced beforehand, enthusiasm still filled the air. After all, it was the moment every member of the IABC had been waiting for: the 2009 Gold Quill Awards gala at the 2009 World Conference.

Heartwarming recognition
When the sole winner from the Philippines was called onstage to receive the much-coveted trophy, we did not hear loud cheers. Instead, a distinct round of applause from an audience of co-achievers conveyed the admiration and, we’d like to think, the respect for the small contingent from our archipelago.

We accepted our award proudly, reflecting on our success:

  • Our entry, the Financial Explorer’s Quiz (FEQ), got a near-perfect score, 6.86 out of a possible 7 points.
  • It was put together by an in-house team and executed with limited resources.
  • It appeared to be the only entry from the Asian region to have survived the rigorous two-tier judging rounds.

As if those weren’t enough, FEQ’s body of work was also among the few award-winning cases exhibited in the hotel lobby during the conference. What an honor!

In hindsight, we say that the true winners are the Filipino people who received financial guidance and information through our innovative tool. The Gold Quill Award, on the other hand, validates the wisdom of effective communication, especially for a financial services company like ours that provides intangible goods like life insurance.

Now, more than ever, our team is inspired to go for the “gold standard” each time we put our ideas to work and every time we set things in motion.

Start preparing your Gold Quill Award entry today! The early-bird deadline is 27 January 2010, and the final deadline is 3 February 2010.
