Communication Job Boards and Resource List

by Joe Dysart

Here are just some of the job boards out there.

Industry-Specific Job Boards

International Association of Business Communicators Job Centre: Testimony to the old axiom, "It's who you know," IABC's Job Centre is a simple-to-use jobs board that's an excellent first stop in any communication's job search. Here you can create your own, free account for tracking job opportunities and offers, and store your resume and template cover letters. IABC will also allow you to post a profile here for employers to view. Plus, it offers a search agent that will auto-email you word of jobs that fit your personal search criteria.

SunOasis Jobs: This is an extremely well-designed, comprehensive jobs and careers site for communicators specializing in editing and writing. You can search SunOasis for jobs by region, in Canada or internationally. Plus, the site sports a wonderfully detailed Q&A insider's overview on how to search the Web for editing and writing jobs.

Careers-N-Communications: Another great niche site, C-n-C enables you to create a candidate profile online that communications firms can peruse. There's also a database of jobs postings.

PRWeekJobs: This site features a multifaceted search engine, enabling visitors to find PR jobs by industry, job title, level of experience and location. All facets of the industry post offerings here: corporate, agency, non-profits and educational organizations. Like most of the larger industry sites, this one also has a sign-up for an email alert service offering news of jobs featuring your personal taste.

WorkinPR.COM: This is one of the more sophisticated boards in the industry, featuring a relatively powerful search engine. Click here to find a PR job by city, state, industry, full-time or part-time, title, income and/or years of experience. The board also offers an email newsletter, tips for a successful PR resume and a monthly profile of a successful PR professional.

BIG BOARDS

You could probably spend days cruising all the behemoth jobs boards on the Web. Hopefully, the selections that follow will save you some time. All placed among the top links recommended by Top10Links, a Web site review firm that rates sites based on traffic, usability and best overall performance.

Monster.com: For many Web analysts, Monster is essentially the benchmark by which all other job boards are measured. Sporting an extremely slick interface, Monster gives job hunters access to about a million jobs in 22 countries. Loaded with all sorts of columns and articles on job hunting, Monster also offers detailed online advisories for those thinking of switching careers, and other "special case" scenarios. Plus, you'll also find chat rooms and bulletin boards where you can swap job-search war stories.

CareerBuilder: Offering a very simple, inviting and uncluttered home page, CareerBuilder automatically imports ads from employer sites twice a week - so you know the listings are current. The board enables you to use up to 13 search criteria to pinpoint a job that's perfect for you. The site also offers quick links to specific searches for jobs in Asia, Canada, India and the UK. Plus, there's a wry bonus: a "Boss Button" on CareerBuilder's home page, which instantly transforms the site into a gray sea of nondescript text. The Boss Button is a perfect foil should your department lead walk by while your ogling greener pastures.

WorkThing.Com: This UK-based job site is conveniently divided into three sections: Search, Career Path (jobs and information on each industry) and At Work (inspiration for your work life). Here you'll find everything from resume posting to interview dos and don'ts to salary comparisons.

HotJobs.com: In addition to the standard services found at other top sites, HotJobs enables you to control which companies see your resume online. It also has an easy-to-use tracking service that will inform you how often your resume has come up in a search, and how many times it has been viewed. You can create and save up to five different "search agents" here, which you can use every time you visit the site. For example: you may want to create search agents featuring your own, personal criteria for jobs in five, specific states -- or in five, specific countries. Search for jobs in 30+ countries in their international directory.
