Employee Publications That Get Noticed

by Sarah Kang, contributing writer

The following case studies, selected from past Gold Quill Award winners, demonstrate excellence in this month's topic.
Note: All case studies are in PDF format.

Play-By-Play Nuclear Refueling Newsletter
Nebraska Public Power District
Nuclear power generating stations experience a high turnover rate of temporary, supplemental employees because of the intense and complex work environment. The Nebraska Public Power District's Cooper Nuclear Station (CNS) faced the challenge of engaging temporary employees during outages and educating them on nuclear safety-conscious work environment behaviors. CNS published an employee newsletter called Play-by-Play, which proved effective in communicating information and developing a strong, loyal relationship with temporary employees.

2006…We're Growing in the Right Direction
British Columbia Automobile Association (BCAA)
Since 2000, The British Columbia Automobile Association (BCAA) provided every employee with an annual booklet outlining the organization's goals, priorities, success measures and initiatives. The booklet was initially well received. However, annual surveys revealed that the increasing amount of information was overwhelming employees and actually decreasing their understanding of the organization's business goals and plans. BCAA reworked the booklet into a more effective internal communication tool: a 12-month calendar.

goodprospects magazine
Prospera Credit Union | Insurance
In a post-merger and communication assessment survey, Prospera Credit Union employees cited a need for established communication channels. The company responded by planning and producing the goodprospects employee magazine as one of three channels for internal communication. With a focus on building culture and strategic operations, the magazine sought to engage employees and educate them about the company.

PG&E@Work Newsletter
Pacific Gas & Electric Co. and ROI Communications
After Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E) emerged from bankruptcy following the California energy crisis, the company needed to undergo a massive business and cultural transformation in order to keep up with industry standards and customer expectations. Uniting employees around common goals and a new company culture would be critical to a successful transformation, and it was clear that internal communications would play a key role. PG&E@Work, an employee newletter, became the main communication channel that educated employees about the transformation process and connected them to the company's larger vision and values.
