Preparing CWT Internally for External Greatness
Development Communication Solutions
After an audit revealed that the culture of Child Welfare Tshwane (CWT) feeds on the negative perceptions the general public holds concerning social work and welfare, Development Communication Solutions (DevCom) developed a series of communication tools that would enable staff to increase public awareness and understanding about the organization. Using a complete communication audit and solution strategy, DevCom helped CWT enhance its communication practices to overcome glaring budget restraints and low staff morale.
Eskom Western Cape DSM Rollout
Eskom
A major technical fault occurred at Koeberg Power Station on Christmas Day 2005. As a result, the electrical supply in the Western Cape of South Africa was severely affected. Faced with severe electricity shortages for at least six months, Eskom implemented an extensive demand side management (DSM) program and launched a major communication campaign to deal with the crisis. The underlying communication strategy was to establish partnerships that would manage the situation and to also create the message, “Together we have the power to save,” which played on the idea that a concerted community effort was needed to steer the region through the crisis. Media partnerships also became crucial in order to disseminate information and to repair reputation damage during the crisis. The focused call-to-action approach was seen as useful, easy-to-understand and changed the way respondents felt about saving electricity.
