Feedback from the 2008 Financial Communication Workshops:

"James Gentry explained the income statement, balance sheet and cash flow sheet in simple, easy to understand ways. In one session, he made them understandable. I have taken accounting classes that didn't accomplish this same feat over the course of five weeks."
- Kris Marubio, Corporate Communications professional from San Francisco, CA

"James Gentry had the experience and the presentation skills to make this topic very interesting and easy to understand."
- Gina Behrman, Manager, Corporate Communications, Saint-Gobain Containers

"Dr. Gentry clearly is an expert in the area of financial communications, and he did an excellent job at sharing that expertise through his workshop presentation."
- Anne Rodriguez, Manager Corporate Communication and Media Relations, Wisconsin Public Power Inc.

workshop agenda

In the wake of the recent market meltdown, businesses need to restore confidence in their companies and financial markets and create some level of transparency. This focus on transparency, integrity and accountability is a renewed call to communication professionals who want a seat at the table.

Your role in understanding and communicating financial information is more important than ever due to market volatility, company failures, accounting scandals and the resulting mistrust and scrutiny.

You say you’re not a numbers person? Financial acumen may not be a natural trait, but it’s a required competency for today’s communication professional. You can’t effectively tell your organization’s story in difficult economic times without understanding your organization’s financial condition, metrics and business issues.

IABC’s 2009 Financial Communication Workshop is designed to help communicators understand the numbers of business and use that knowledge to manage their companies' reputations internally and externally. The audience size is limited to allow for open discussion and focused learning.

Learn from financial expert and professor James K. Gentry, Ph.D., who is recognized for his ability to explain complex financial and accounting information in language that corporate communicators and journalists can easily understand. For more than 25 years, he has taught thousands of professionals, like you, how to understand the language of business.

who should attend

This workshop is designed for communication and public relations professionals who work for public or private companies and communicate financial information with employees, investors, customers and/or the media.

Workshop Leader

James Gentry photoJames K. Gentry, Ph.D., is a professor and former dean at the School of Journalism and Mass Communications at the University of Kansas where he teaches “Financial Fundamentals for Communicators” in the marketing communication master’s degree program for professionals.

He has presented workshops on the numbers of business for companies such as Freddie Mac, Cerner Corp., American Standard Co., AMC Entertainment, Teva Neurosciences and WABCO.

Gentry earned IABC’s distinguished “Recommended Speaker” designation for his presentation at IABC’s 2007 International Conference. His presentations are lively, humorous and (most important when dealing with numbers) understandable.
