RESEARCH FOUNDATION STUDIES

The IABC Research Foundation trustees have been working diligently this board term to achieve our goals of refining our processes for getting studies into the pipeline.

The following studies and surveys are in progress, and we expect them to be released in 2010:

Best Practices in Corporate Social Responsibility: A timely and evolving topic for business and the communicators who support them;
Communication Department Structures and Best Practices: How successful organizations staff effective communication departments, regardless of situational challenges (like the current economic environment)

And, after input from a variety of sources (most importantly, IABC members), the trustees have begun the work to move the following topics into our research pipeline for 2010-2011:

Conversations with CEOs: Insight from CEOs around the world about successful organizational communication functions (and more);
Competencies for Success: This is a companion to the “conversations” study above, gaining insight into the competencies required for organizational leaders and professional business communicators today and into the future;
Online mass communication: Focusing on emerging trends and potential best communication practices in the development of online mass collaboration systems.
IABC Membership Profile Study 2010-2011: Addressing compensation, job structure and satisfaction.

Update on ROI study

Last year, the Research Foundation commissioned a project to review the ROI of some of our Gold Quill winners. Unfortunately, the study was incomplete and did not meet our standards of evidence that would allow the Research Foundation to release the collected data. This process did inform the level of complexity we will need to address when conducting research on ROI.
This topic is still of interest to our members and our profession. We will continue to look for opportunities to explore the practice and methods for calculating ROI for communicators.
Parties interested in funding ROI research should contact Mari Pavia at IABC so we can explore a potential partnership.

These studies and surveys cannot come to fruition without adequate financial and/or in-kind support and we are so grateful for the individual and chapter support we receive every year!
