The winning entry will also be featured on our web site and serve as a case study for other student chapters.

We asked Sheng Huang, past president of 2008 Student Chapter of the Year, IABC/UC Berkeley, to tell us about his experience preparing his CMA entry. Sheng writes:

“Preparing our CMA entry was an initiative that took the whole team to complete. When I was drafting the work plan, I asked each VP to write a blurb about what they did and how their role contributed to IABC/UCB as a whole. This was extremely helpful in understanding the ‘big picture’ of the organization and how each person and activity helped further the purpose of IABC at UCB.

My best advice is not to forget that the results portion is just as important as implementation. This is where you should analyze whether your chapters’ programs are really effective. It’s okay if they weren’t, as long as you state how you can modify it to make it work! (No one really gets it right the first time!)

Overall, the application process is like writing a big résumé—for your entire chapter. It does take effort and time to complete, but it is highly rewarding in the end. Not only did I become more attuned to the needs of my chapter, but I also realized just how far we've come as a team and appreciated the board that much more as a result.”

Thanks and congratulations again, IABC/UCB! To learn more, check out best practices from past student CMA winners.
