Editor’s note: Many of our student members will be away from school on break from June to August, so Student Connection decided to go on vacation, too! Our next full issue will arrive in your inbox this fall. In the meantime, check out this month’s advice column to learn how you can take advantage of your IABC membership over the summer, and keep an eye out for periodic news and updates from Student Services—or send us your own! We love hearing from you. Enjoy your time off! |

COOL COMM JOBS
by Janna White
John Mink applied for a job at Harley-Davidson Motor Company (H-D) “on a whim,” fully expecting to be turned down. He possessed relevant communication work experience, but he assumed his lack of familiarity with the manufacturing environment would immediately disqualify him. Luckily, the staff of H-D’s Vehicle and Powertrain Operations plant in Kansas City, Missouri was looking for something a little different.
FROM THE INSIDE
by Angela Sinickas, ABC, IABC Fellow
Many efforts to measure communication question how well messages have been understood and how effective different communication channels are. What we as communicators often forget to ask are the questions that help us connect our communications with the effect they have on behavior—in other words, the effect they have on improvements in the bottom line. Successful measurement will help you provide quantifiable proof of the impact of your communications.
STUDENT SPOTLIGHT
by Janna White
She has traveled to India, learned conversational Danish, and completed a 1,800-mile trip by bicycle. She helped coordinate the Vancouver, British Columbia promotional screenings of Million Dollar Baby and Miss Congeniality. She can explain microcredit so that it sounds as simple as elementary school arithmetic. Is there anything Christina Wu can’t do?
STUDENT SUBMISSION
by Jane Doku, IABC/Toronto student member
Presentations. Assignments. Work. A social life. How does any student have time to volunteer on top of all of that? As a Humber College post-graduate public relations student, I have come to realize that not only is it possible, but it will actually put you ahead of the pack.
