EXPLORING WORK ENVIRONMENTS*

Smaller Firms May Be Ideal for New Grads

by Gillian Silver-Rodis, ABC, Ph.D.

Sarah Droz is a senior-level communicator and business owner who, over the course of her career, has been handed the toughest of scenarios and has risen to the challenge each and every time. What is the greatest resource in her strategic approach?

As the sole proprietor of True Marketing, a full-service agency specializing in public relations, marketing campaign development and direct mail, Droz brings expertise and ingenuity to her clientele. However, the work is too ambitious to execute on her own. What she needs most critically when implementing the programs she designs are conscientious, eager-to-learn employees who enjoy diversified work.

*This piece is the first in a series that will run in each issue of Student Connection this year. Silver will explore what it is like to work in communication in nonprofit organizations, government and other settings.

FROM THE INSIDE

Communicating Successfully Through Press Releases in the Web 2.0 World

by Lisa Davis, senior marketing manager at Marketwire

Nobody ever said communicating was easy. Taking a message and relaying it to an audience so that they not only understand it but act on it is an onerous task indeed. It’s a tired cliché that in the Web 2.0 world, our jobs as communicators have changed dramatically. Social media, mobile devices and the democratized Web have turned the ways in which we think about crafting messages and targeting audiences inside out.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: LAURA CAPP

Why be an IABC chapter leader (or, how to find your wedding DJ through IABC)

Young professional Laura Capp served as the vice president of marketing and brand champion for IABC/Pittsburgh during the 2007-2008 board year. This year, in addition to her new job at Carlow University, she decided to take on the role of co-president for IABC/Pittsburgh. Student Connection spoke with Laura to find out what drives her volunteerism and how it has affected her professional career (and her love life!).
