EXPLORING WORK ENVIRONMENTS

Professional Communicator Reflects on the Educational Setting

by Gillian Silver-Rodis, ABC, Ph.D.

For the past 10 months, Katheryn Brekken has served as the public affairs officer for the College of Southern Nevada. The position capitalizes on the research and editorial skills she honed as a reporter, as she works to build the profile of higher education. Initially, Brekken was assigned to handle press releases, and record requests, and to manage the newsletter. But a change in staffing meant she unexpectedly fell into the role of spokesperson as well.

*This piece is the second in a series that will run in each issue of Student Connection this year. Silver will explore what it is like to work in communication in nonprofit organizations, government and other settings.

FROM THE INSIDE

With A Little Luck

by Don Ranly, Ph.D.

You’ve heard it many times: It’s all just luck.

Well, maybe not. Nevertheless, I have come to realize how much of life does come down to luck, either good or bad. What is just as true about luck is that some people wouldn’t know good luck if they stumbled on it. I don’t believe that we always make our own luck, but I do know when it comes our way, we have to grab it.

Giving Back: A case for volunteering

by Lauren English

For as long as I can remember, my family has been active in volunteering. I truly believe that children who grow up in an environment where their parents volunteer realize the difference volunteering can make in others’ lives and become volunteers themselves. I hope to inspire other teens and people of all ages to find their passion for helping others and become volunteers.
