Decades of opinion research show that Albertans are concerned about protecting water and soil, protecting human and animal health, and water use by the oil and gas industry. Albertans expect the regulator to ensure public safety (89 percent), enforce the rules (85 percent), and protect the environment (82 percent).
The work of the AER is garnering international attention. Pipeline releases, flow-to-surface events, tailings ponds, seismic events, and other issues continue to be top of mind for Albertans, Canadians, and many international audiences. Media monitoring and inquiry tracking identified a need to communicate the status and results of AER investigations, measures taken to ensure rules are followed, and penalties applied when rules are broken.
As part of our commitment to earning public confidence, the AER needed to do more than ensure that appropriate requirements are in place; we needed to communicate how we are enforcing those requirements so that Albertans will feel confident in our ability as an energy regulator. The online Compliance Dashboard meets this need by providing stakeholders with timely and comprehensive information about incidents, investigations, compliance assurance activities, and enforcement actions in Alberta’s energy sector.More
