Bagnado: Avoid this plastic (film) disaster!

gq-logoMinnesotans throw away more than 500 tons (1 million pounds) of plastic packaging and grocery bags every day. That’s more than 12 pounds of garbage every second being added to our landfills.

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) recognized the need to capture the attention of its
residents and educate them about their opportunities to reduce or recycle plastic bags and film.
Generating awareness for this issue and enhancing someone’s knowledge is the best way to influence behavior change. Since behavior change takes time, we wanted to capture the attention of a large number of Minnesota residents at once.

We determined the best place to reach our audience was in the Eco Experience building at the
Minnesota State Fair. Nearly 1.8 million guests visit the State Fair annually making it one of the most popular tourist destinations in the region. The Eco Experience is a one-of-a-kind educational exhibit presented by the Minnesota State Fair and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency. Filled with hands-on activities, demonstrations and resources, the Eco Experience is supported by dozens of local organizations and during the 12 days of the Minnesota State Fair.

Boring data documenting the amount of plastic bags and film thrown away by Minnesotans every day was visually transformed into a stunning tornado of waste. Bagnado highlighted the collective impact of our actions and reached thousands at the Minnesota State Fair. By visually highlighting this data we educated Minnesotans on:

  • Where and how to recycle their plastic bags and film.
  • Strategies to reduce their waste.
  • Why recycling is important for businesses.
