gq-logoThe University of Regina is a small post-secondary institution in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, that has approximately 14,300 full-time and part-time students. Its 2015-2020 strategic plan outlines both student success and alumni engagement as priorities. One of the ways External Relations, our office, contributes to student success is by securing donations for bursaries, which give students access to educational opportunities. Alumni engagement is interconnected with External Relation’s ability to secure donations in that alumni are an untapped source of contributions. Currently less than one percent of all donations to the University come from alumni.

Since 2012, thousands of Canadian charities participate in Giving Tuesday (the first Tuesday in December) by holding various fundraisers and awareness-raising campaigns for their organizations on that day. This global movement provided us with an opportunity to start engaging current students before they become alumni; to educate them about the effect donations have on the lives of their fellow students; and to raise money for bursaries.
